چکیده

The human brain cortex is a highly convoluted sheet of gray matter composed of folds (gyri) and fissures (sulci). Sulci serve as important macroscopic landmarks to distinguish different functional areas of the brain. The exact segmentation and identification of sulci is critical for human brain mapping studies that aim at finding correspondences between structures and their function. In this paper, a sulcus identification algorithm is introduced using shape, orientation, location, and neighborhood information. Experimental results demonstrate that the method is efficient and accurate. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Labeling of Cortical Sulci using Multidimensional Scaling

The task of classifying or labeling cortical sulci is made difficult by the fact that individual sulci may not have unique distinguishing features and usually need to be identified by a multivariate feature set that takes the relative spatial arrangement into account. In this paper, classical multidimensional scaling (MDS), which gives a geometric interpretation to input dissimilarity data, is ...

Quantitative Analysis of Open Curves in Brain Imaging: Applications to White Matter Fibers and Sulci

There are about a hundred sulci in the human brain and over a hundred billion whitematter fibers. These two anatomical structures differ in their number, their physicalarrangements and in the function they serve but they do share a common geometricdescription: they are both open continuous curves. This thesis is a study of how thephysical attributes of open curves can be used to...

Non-linear Local Registration of Functional Data

Within the scope of three-dimensional brain imaging we propose an inter-individual fusion scheme to register functional activations relatively to anatomical cortical structures, the sulci. This approach is local and non-linear. It relies on a statistical sulci shape model accounting for the inter-individual variability of a population of subjects, and providing deformation modes relatively to a...

Matching of Polygon Objects by Optimizing Geometric Criteria

Despite the semantic criteria, geometric criteria have different performances on polygon feature matching in different vector datasets. By using these criteria for measuring the similarity of two polygons in all matchings, the same results would not have been obtained. To achieve the best matching results, the determination of optimal geometric criteria for each dataset is considered necessary....

Automatic segmentation of human brain sulci

The neocortical surface has a rich and complex structure comprised of folds (gyri) and fissures (sulci). Sulci are important macroscopic landmarks for orientation on the cortex. A precise segmentation and labeling of sulci is helpful in human brain mapping studies relating brain anatomy and function. Due to their structural complexity and inter-subject variability, this is considered as a non-t...
